Montego replacement might not take long apparently. (Hysterical text convo with wife included below)

!!! UNKNOWN CONTENT TYPE !!!

Talked to the guy today he’s going to make some minor adjustments to it today and/or tomorrow. If he gets those done I’m going to buy it and bring it home.

Also- hysterical text convo with my wife who sounds just a little skeptical about me driving it back....

Drive hundreds of miles in a strange car with questionable brakes? I don’t know why your wife is being so negative.

I had a similar incident when I bought my CB-1 motorcycle. Except I’d already given him the money for it and got the title. He goes “Oh, btw, the front brakes were acting up but I threw some new pads on it, so you should be all good.”

Well, naturally it wasn’t all good. After 180 mile return trip home, I was coming up on an intersection when a car ran the light and I had to jump on the brakes... which weren’t there. Except, suddenly, they were all there, and she got into a nasty tank slapper. The next thing I remember was me sliding on my ass across the intersection, watching my bike on it’s side, spinning in circles, kicking up sparks.

Brakes only slow you down!

yikes bro.

I mean, I’m gonna test drive it before i buy it. He has zero of my dollars. If it’s not sorted when it drives I’m not leaving with it. I’ll waste a whole day before I buy a car I shouldn’t.

Wow, it looks like it has a pretty decent ride height already. Plenty of oil pan clearance.

Yeah the wheels and tires are obviously not stock and gave it a bit more height i believe. he’s got slightly wider ones on the rear too.

He said the wheels and tires are brand new, so I’ll keep these as my street tires and buy a set of tires/wheels for the rally course.

Good plan. I wasn’t trying to scare you out of it, but my tale was cautionary. Make sure you check it out before you trust his word on it.

Oh absolutely. He’s warned me about it now (which i appreciate) and he says he’s a mechanic and that he plans to finish up work on another car today and then move on to the Capri. After talking to me he realized it would be easier to sell if he fixed that whether it was to me or someone else.

Awesome, well good luck and I hope it works out. I hope we got to hear Capri rally stories soon.

Theres another, more expensive capri for sale that’s much cleaner only about 40 minutes from this one. so if it turns out to be garbage, i can give that guy a call and try and meet him while I’m down there.

I just bought a Jeep. Seller said the tires were brand new with 95% tread, except the back right. Fronts were at about 30%, rear left at about 10%, and rear right bald. DOT number dates them as being manufactured in 2001. To be fair, the tires do look to be in pretty good condition in the pic, but I would check the DOT number on them anyway. Good luck!

hahaha, yeah this will be a very thorough inspection. I’ve gotta drive it home, definitely going to be thorough

If I wanted something that I could walk up and plop down cash without caring I’d go to the one about 40 minutes away from this one.

This car is priced perfectly for me to be able to modify it for racing, and also buy wheels/tires for racing.

I would wonder about using the bubble back on a rally cross car. Aren’t these getting a little pricey to replace? How does the bubble compare to the normal hatch in terms of strength and longevity given the beating it’s expected to take? Perhaps you plan to take it off or put a regular hatch on the back and sell the bubble?

I must have answers!

Keeping the bubble on! If it helps any - it’s not real glass. It’s a composite. I actually trust the composite bubble more than a legit glass hatch. Might even weigh less if I’m lucky.

BUBBLE TROUBLE

That might be it’s rally car name.

BUBBLE TROUBLE! Perfect!

I didn’t know they were composite. I was looking at a bus RV conversion earlier this year and one of the issues was a cracked windshield. The awesome curved glass would have been very difficult to replace.

Yeah Bubble Trouble might be a thing now.

And cracked curved glass is a nightmare. Ask any classic Barracuda owner.
